Anna Brady (Amy Adams) is a planner from Boston who stages apartments for Realtors. Anna has been exclusively dating a cardiologist, Jeremy (Adam Scott) for four years.
As Anna was fitting a dress for her sister's wedding, her best friend stormed in to the room, announcing that she saw Jeremy coming out from a Jewellry Store known for its Engagement Rings. Anna got very excited and expected Jeremy to propose to her during dinner that night. To her dismay, Jeremy gave her a pair of diamond earrings instead and announced that he will be travelling to Dublin the next day for a conference.
Anna, not wanting to wait another year before Jeremy proposes, decided to follow him (Jeremy) to Dublin where she plans to propose marriage on February 29th. It was an old irish folklore from the 5th century, that women can propose marriage to men on a leap year.
Bad luck soon started when Anna's plane was forced to land in Wales due to bad weather. She is not able to get a connection flight to Dublin since the airport is closed. Anna decided to charter a private ship instead, however she is forced to disembark in Dingle due to a heavy storm.
Anna walked from the shore to the nearest inn she could find. From there she hires the cynical and sarcastic inn owner, Declan (Matthew Goode) to drive her to Dublin. Declan agreed since he needs the money to pay for his debts and save his inn.
Along their journey they encountered many incidents and fell in love in the process.
When they arrived in the hotel at Dublin where Jeremy is checked-in, Declan refused to accept Anna's payment for his services. Just before he could tell Anna his feelings, Jeremy (Adam Scott) showed up Jeremy proposed marriage to Anna and she hesitantly accepted. When Anna looked around the hotel lobby, Declan already left.
Declan found another way to raise money to pay his debts and successfully saved his inn.
Back in Boston during Anna and Jeremy's Engagement Party, Jeremy was casually telling friends and Anna how he was forced to tell a senior colleague that he is already "engaged" (even if he is not), just so he could join the Cardiology congress. Jeremy also said that it wont be such a bad idea to be engaged to Anna since they've been dating for 4 years already.
Anna walked out from Jeremy that same night and flew back to Dingle.
She surprised Declan in his inn and told him how she and Jeremy did not work out. Anna proposed that Declan gives "them" another chance but with no pressures of making any plans whatsoever. Declan declined and walked out of the room.
Anna ran out from the inn. Declan ran after her. He went down on his knees and asked Anna to marry him instead. (He also explained that the reason why he walked out from her at the inn was to get the ring from his room :p)
I know there are a lot of bad reviews for Leap Year. I also know it will never get an award, nor get nominated, but I loved it! I love Anna and Declan. "J" loved the views of Ireland.
My suggestion is to watch it with spouse or significant other and fall in love all over again.
And remember to "always kiss like it was the first time and the last time".
~~~
Enjoy.
Fall in love all over again.
