On Training Children

J and I have trained our eldest DD as early as 5 years old.

We have timed her meals eating on her own to ensure she finish all that is on her plate least time possible and the food needs to be finished-- no leftovers. She takes her plate to the sink and wash it.

At that age, the motivation is to gain enough points to earn the privilege to play the computer, PSP, PS2 or to simply outside.

After school, she put away her bags and lunch boxes placed in the sink. She put away her socks and jackets; the uniforms need to be placed in the hamper. We have also taught her to pack away toys before asking for others to be taken out.

She take her own bath, dry herself and brush her teeth. Its took us a while o get this up to speed -- sometimes our tendency as parents is just do it ourselves to avoid stressing and the kids mucking up. However I think its really important that they learn.

Now that DD is 10 years old things has improved but the rest is still a work in progress. However, we have faith that as long as we are consistent with our discipline and encouragement she will continue to do it. She is now helping me put away the washing from the line, make her own bed, help with the dishes and even learned to change our youngest DD's nappy. :) :) :)

Good job DD! We are so proud of you!
